Team Learning

What could be the consequences of a team not learning well together?

I am an advocate of Systemic Coaching which is coaching that helps teams and individuals better understand the system context in which they work. With this awareness it is difficult to manage the hidden drivers of behaviour such as ego politics, hidden assumptions, hidden interdependencies and misaligned values.

Without this context, individuals can work ferociously to make something happen without knowing that they will be unable to deliver what they plan because the system they are in is designed to make sure that certain types of changes never happen. They may also fail to deliver because they are unable to work through the organisational politics inherant in their organisation.

Systemic coaching helps to reveal the patterns and assumptions that exist and enables team members to work through ways to manage the ‘system’ more effectively. Team learn about how they can ‘learn together’ to explore and develop solutions identifying the barriers to learning and honest reflection created by conflicting KPIs or assumptions about each other.

A great source of resources about the value of systemic coaching is the Academy of Executive Coaching. I’ll be periodically posting articles from this source and others in order to build awareness of this very valuable approach to learning and executive coaching.
